Effective Speed: Can Cost Effective Transportation Be Sustainable (Reducing Emissions and External Costs)?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Given the need to reduce fuel emissions from transport many research studies have been devoted development of technologies and identification new policies tackle this problem. The majority these strategies either increase costs (e.g., technology), are more time-consuming (i.e., choosing a sustainable mode transport), or encourage consumers forgo travel plans flights holiday destinations). Implementing any changes is challenging for society where cost, quality time key motivators. paper differs previous research, given that focus not slow down global warming, through technologies, inconveniences lifestyle. Instead, improve sustainability using current technology without increasing cost factor. By concept effective speed, estimates possible reduction in emissions, external land use if people can be persuaded choose most cost-effective transport. speed calculated by dividing distance travelled spent travelling work earning money pay commute). This case study uses data survey residents New York City (NYC) incorporates supporting about commuting patterns Germany. If their NYC, it emission reductions up 14.7%, 11.6% time–area requirements 16.5%. results highlight do always spend on activity way. Indeed, encouraging with faster may even effects some.

External Costs of Air Emissions from Transportation

The production of equipment and materials used for transportation facilities and services can have significant environmental effects. Considerable effort is expended to reduce such effects as efficiently and effectively as possible. In this paper, we estimate external environmental costs resulting from the production of common transportation equipment, materials, and services. These external co...

Can Pv or Solar Thermal Systems Be Cost Effective Ways of Reducing Co2 Emissions for Residential Buildings?

This paper compares two solar systems, an actual building integrated, photovoltaic roof (BIPV) and a notional solar thermal system for a residential block in London, UK. The carbon payback for the solar thermal system is 2 years, the BIPV system has a carbon payback of 6 years. Simple economic payback times for both systems are more than 50 years. Calculations considering the current UK energy ...

Can Aging in Place Be Cost Effective? A Systematic Review

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY To systematically review cost, cost-minimization and cost-effectiveness studies for assisted living technologies (ALTs) that specifically enable older people to 'age in place' and highlight what further research is needed to inform decisions regarding aging in place. DESIGN People aged 65+ and their live-in carers (where applicable), using an ALT to age in place at home o...

Screening for lung cancer: can it be cost-effective?

Last year, the Lancet reported on a study concerning a particular, avant-garde regimen of CT-based screening for lung cancer, showing its great superiority relative to the corresponding regimen based on traditional radiography (Lancet 1999;354:99-105). That report was met with great interest in the media, worldwide. It thereby also led to substantial public demand for the state-of-the-art scree...

Can optimized effective potentials be determined uniquely?

Local ~multiplicative! effective exchange potentials obtained from the linear-combinationof-atomic-orbital ~LCAO! optimized effective potential ~OEP! method are frequently unrealistic in that they tend to exhibit wrong asymptotic behavior ~although formally they should have the correct asymptotic behavior! and also assume unphysical rapid oscillations around the nuclei. We give an algebraic pro...
